Home Theater Scam Alert

[Incidentally, this is my own writing--I didn't copy this "to warn others". This really did happen to me.]
Scam Alert–Today (8/1/2012) I was in the Sharon Woods shopping center (corner of Sharon Woods Blvd and 161) when two guys in a van called out to me. “Hey man. I know this sounds weird, but would you like a free wireless home theater system?” WUT? “Yeah, I know. We’re installers and our job gave us one extra so we’re trying to get rid of it…” I didn’t approach the van, but I could see some largish boxes in the back. There were so many red flags going off in my head, I just replied “Uh, no. I’m good.”

This is evidently known as the “home theater scam” and seems to be a derivative of the “white van speaker scam”. Now the claim of “free” differs from other scammer reports, but I could see this going down in a couple of ways.
1) They’ll give it all to me for free, but charge for the install, well more than they paid for the whole set.
2) If no install, then they’ll renege on the “free” and try to get a couple hundred for it, well more than they paid.

3) as an added bonus, they’ll probably case my house for a later hit.

Please please please, remember that if it is too good to be true, it probably is.

(BTW, cheap home theater systems on Amazon can be lower than $100. Maybe their scam was “Free ‘$3000′ DVD/speakers if you take this ‘$2000′ TV off our hands for $800″)
