Your point regarding cross-platform is well taken. I really didn't spend a lot of time researching which language to teach her. I chose VB because a) I have familiarity with it, and b) I found a kid-oriented, free teaching resource, and c) I found a free compiler. I'm sure there are others that match these criteria.

Other languages I would very much like to teach her (and learn more myself) are Perl and PHP. I've dabbled with both a bit, and I think I could help her along the way with the right teaching resource.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Very cool!

May I also suggest you consider teaching her Python, via http://www.diveintopython.org/toc/index.html ? Python is an interpreted object oriented language that is extremely versatile, and cross platform. I think in the long run learning something like Python will provide a better foundation for programming than learning a platform-specific language like VisualBasic.
