Camping Isn’t Camping Anymore

Camping isn’t camping anymore, if what we see at Ohio state parks is any indication. It is now “Recreational Outdoor Family Activities (ROFA)”. When “camp sites” have more asphalt than grass, and more attention is paid to the electric hook up than potential tent location, we are no longer talking about camping as I knew it. I like Wikipedia’s description: “Camping may involve the use of a tent, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all.” RV “camping” is no longer camping–its Parking, With Style.

Seriously, these folks have great set ups for a party, or really enjoying their asphalt pad, but this isn’t camping. To call it that is like saying a DVD player in a mini-van is a “drive in movie.”

Preaching to the choir honey. Let’s hope we can find a place where camping means quietly enjoying some simplified living, where you might actually hear owl calls more than one time and see wild animals in their homes.

John Bryan State Park has more non-electric camp sites than electric sites. I haven’t been there myself yet, but it was highly recommended to me.
See the John Bryan State Park website for more details.
