Data Data Everywhere

I wrote a document the other day, and now I can’t find it. Where, oh where, could it have gone? Let me count the locations….

  1. Work laptop
  2. Wife’s laptop
  3. Home desktop
  4. My flash drive
  5. Home network drive
  6. Work shared drive
  7. GMail Drive
  8. The flash card plugged into our printer, which appears as a shared drive on all our computers at home.
  9. Personal web site
  10. My MP3 Player

OK, the number of places to lose a document are simply staggering. And that doesn’t include all the other possibilities like MediaMax, or Yahoo Briefcase, etc.

What you need to do is create a revision controlled home directory! Then your home directory can be the same on every computer you use, and you get multiple redundant backups (in the form of working copies on each of your workstations) for free!

Because all of your home directories derive from the SVN repository, anything you save and check into the repository will be immediately available on all your other workstations. No more worrying about which machine holds which documents.
