smoni - ReceiveDatagram error 10054
All my computers on my home network started receiving this odd error message: ReceiveDatagram error 10054, with the title of Smoni, and only an OK button.
I searched the web, but only found a few, non-descript solutions. I felt, in my gut, that it had something to do with the Linksys NSLU2 that I had just installed, but none of the cryptic posts that I found had mentioned the NSLU2. But really… I had just installed it. Then I saw a reference to a Brother printer–hey, I have a Brother MFC420CN, mayhaps that is the solution…
So I pulled up the BRAdmin Professional tool to see if I could figure it out. Hmm, IP address of the Brother (purchased and configured 1+ years ago) is 192.168.1.30. SHIT. That is exactly what I had just set the NSLU2 to. Changed the printer to 192.168.1.40. Now none of the computers on my network are getting the error anymore. DOH.
Seriously, DOH!
If this solves your problem, please leave a comment. Most of the searches that come to my blog hit this page. Let other folks know, that this will probably work for them with a comment. Just log in as user (password user) to leave an anonymous comment. Thanks!
Error showed up after installing StarOffice 7, along with Adabas program. DO have a Brother Network Printer installed on the LAN: fail to see why StarOffice would interfere, but will “check it out…”
Smoni ReceiveDatagram error 10054
I installed my Brother DCP-315CN after a formatting C
I tried changing the IP after reading this and that fixed it.
Thanks!

Same error with my brother MFC-425CN printer in a network controlled by a linksys switch. I found out that there was a IP conflict. A reset of my switch solved the problem because it resets all the IP addresses in the network including the IP address of the printer.
Regards,
Frans
Had the same error. Have the same printer. Coincidence? I think not! Thanks for posting this.
All right! I got the Smoni - ReceiveDatagram error # 10054 too! And at the same time, plus few seconds my system told me there was an IP address conflict on my network. I had network conflicts occasionally before but it was the first Smoni message, so I decided to investigate it.
I do have a Brother printer, MFC640W, excellent machine, I use one at work too. I also have a 420CN. Both best bang for the bucks.
Else my network equipment is mainly AirLink, also good bang for the bucks.
So I’ll conclude that it may not be Brother related, but more a timing question during an IP conflict situation.
Cheers.
May Love and Intelligence be with us.
Ciao Rick.

Same error message - I have Brother MFC-5440CN networked via Belkin switch. But no known IP conflict or recent config changes. You topped Google on the search, so just popped into say ‘hello’. All the best Steve
This is part of Brother’s cooperation with law enforcement. Don’t expect them to respond to this
Worked for me too. Thanks!
Brother 5440CN networked printer connected to a Linksys router. Got the error after installing the printer on my laptop and then went to work and the error started. Strange since this network is not the “home” network. Had to exit out of control center to get error to stop. So now control center is not listed to start on startup. I think this means that to do a network scan on my home network, I’ll have to manually start the control center before trying to scan. No biggie, don’t need to scan that often.
Thanks for putting this out there since the other hits were STRANGE!
Another piece of the puzzle …
I just installed a trial version of TrendMicro’s Internet Security 2007 on my laptop last night, as I’m thinking of dumping my current McAfee/Webroot combo on the home systems. Well, this morning the error mentioned above popped up on my *wife’s* computer. And for the record, I do have a Brother 5440CN, a replacement for a failed 3440.
If I figure out anything more on this, I’ll add to this blog.
Cheers,
Mike
I got a Brother MFC-420CN hooked up to an Airlink wireless router, and the ReceiveDatagram error 10054 keep popping up everytime the computer starts up. I tried changing the IP address of the printer, but my Dell still couldn’t communicate with the printer.
After 2 hours of searching for solution on the net, I finally found a posting in another forum. You have to go to Control Panel -> right click on Printers and Fax -> Properties -> click on Ports tab -> click on Configure Port -> under the Printer and Port Name, type in the IP number that you assigned to the printer (mine has the printer name filled in, which doesn’t seem to work, so I had to type in the IP number). Problem solved!
Hope this save some time for future user with the same problem.

Boy am I glad I found this website Thanks for a concise and very timely solution to this problem. I have a DELL work laptop connected via wireless home router to a Brother MFC-5840CN. Just started getting the Error 10054 and thought it was related to some new proxy network settings imposed by my employer. I made the changes you suggested and it works a treat.
Cheers

I have the Brother 420-cn, and I had the same message. I thought someone might have installed some kind of root kit or other little nasty. WOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFHHHHHHHHHHHH
Yes, same error I have a Brother DCP-315CN networked printer. Just did a search on the error message and found your page. Sorted the problem straight away,
Thanks

B.V. — You solved my problem. After changing routers, my MFC-420CN was not connecting on the network (except for the scanner). I had uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and left a message with Brother “support” which only got an automated “we will respond within 24 hours” response. After waiting a week with nothing from Brother, I finally stumbled on your solution to enter the ISP address and it works! Thanks!
I just had it happen to me after a momentary power glitch. Turned out my Brother MFC-5440cn rebooted after the glitch and gave that error.
The same error message started to appear after a short power cut. I found your site after googling the error message. Switched off Brother MFC-425CN printer, Netgear wireless router and disconnected all leads. Re-connected router and powered it up, then connected printer to router and powered that up. Router and printer allocated new different IP addresses and error message has stopped. Thanks for the tip.
thanks for the help. I too thought it was a hack or spyware, and when it reappeared after a full system reset I was very upset. I have a brother MFC5440 with a newer Linksys, and this combination has been causing the smoni error. Why couldn’t they name the error “IP conflict”? If you are going through the trouble of creating a window that says SMONI, just add some real description of what the problem is. I’ll never understand some programmers, guess I should have stayed in the business.
Thanks very much for your website!!!
Thanks! Apparently there is a set of brother printers with a dumb IP stack - it only appears to ask for a new IP address (using DHCP) when power-cycled. This came up after a power-flop that seems to have left the printer and one PC with the same IP address. It’s good that the printer doesn’t talk much because usually having two devices with the same IP address kills the whole network…
I have the same error, and depending on wether it has been hit by a power surge, or if it wants to it will not happen every time I power up my PC. I don’t know everything my hardware experience is a little dusty at this point. If it was in fact a Brother issue, or an IP address problem it would happen every time. (I would think). I also have the Lynk sys wireless , print server and Brother MF210C, this just decided to happen one day and it is intermittent. Timing somewhere. Are you guys masking the problem or fixing it! Food for thought! Maybe if you change the sequence of the programs opening, that may also hide the problem. Just food for thought! An older Engineer, Hardware not software. Seems to be hardware related. I have had the same set up for two years, it just popped up one day. And is not a steady error….
brother printer, linksys router, same problem. Thanks!
