$8 Home Network Rack

My $8 Home Network Rack has been featured on three blogs so far:
Make
Gizmodo
LifeHacker

In just about two days, it has received almost 5,500 views, and a number of very positive comments. I’ve also been watching the number of links to it on Del.icio.us. After Make and Gizmodo mentioned it, there were about 7 other people who had linked it. When LifeHacker featured it, that went to 35. Now, if it hit del.icio.us/popular, that would just rock. All in all, I’m pleased to have my 10 minutes of Internet fame.

Some folks have wondered about the heat dissipation ability. Well I took my handy household thermometer and checked, right between the DSL modem and the NSLU2. Less than 15 degrees (F) above room temperature. The only thing that seemed to behave flaky was the NSLU2, but I think I figured that out.

smoni – ReceiveDatagram error 10054

All my computers on my home network started receiving this odd error message: ReceiveDatagram error 10054, with the title of Smoni, and only an OK button.

I searched the web, but only found a few, non-descript solutions. I felt, in my gut, that it had something to do with the Linksys NSLU2 that I had just installed, but none of the cryptic posts that I found had mentioned the NSLU2. But really… I had just installed it. Then I saw a reference to a Brother printer–hey, I have a Brother MFC420CN, mayhaps that is the solution…

So I pulled up the BRAdmin Professional tool to see if I could figure it out. Hmm, IP address of the Brother (purchased and configured 1+ years ago) is 192.168.1.30. SHIT. That is exactly what I had just set the NSLU2 to. Changed the printer to 192.168.1.40. Now none of the computers on my network are getting the error anymore. DOH.

Seriously, DOH!

If this solves your problem, please leave a comment. Most of the searches that come to my blog hit this page. Let other folks know, that this will probably work for them with a comment. Just log in as user (password user) to leave an anonymous comment. Thanks!
